Medieval leather boots should feel secure without crushing the toes, pinching the widest part of the foot, or allowing the heel to lift excessively. Because handmade leather gradually softens with wear, the goal is not to buy a painfully tight pair and hope it stretches into place. The goal is to start with the right length, width, and volume for your foot.

How should medieval leather boots fit?
Your toes should have enough room to lie naturally, the ball of the foot should sit at the widest part of the boot, and the heel should feel controlled when you walk. A small amount of movement can be normal in handmade boots, but your foot should not slide forward and backward with every step.
Measure both feet while standing
Feet spread slightly under body weight, so measure while standing rather than sitting. Measure from the back of the heel to the longest toe, then measure the widest part of each foot. Use the larger foot as your reference.

Length is only half the fit
Two people can have the same foot length and very different widths. If you normally buy wide shoes, have a high instep, or regularly feel pressure across the forefoot, width should be part of the decision from the beginning.
What if you are between sizes?
Do not automatically size down just because leather softens. Length does not meaningfully stretch the way surface leather can relax around the foot. If you are between sizes, compare your measurements with the product's size information and ask for fit help before production.
Plan for the socks you will actually wear
A Ren Faire in warm weather may call for lighter socks, while a colder reenactment weekend may mean thicker wool socks. Measure and fit with your intended sock thickness in mind.

How should the ankle and calf feel?
Taller boots should feel secure without cutting into the ankle or calf. Lace-up and toggle styles give some adjustment, but the shaft should still suit your proportions. If you have very large calves or unusually slim ankles, contact us before ordering.
What changes during break-in?
Full-grain leather can become more flexible and conform more closely to the foot with use. That can improve comfort around flex points and reduce initial stiffness. Break-in should not be used to correct a boot that is clearly too short.
